The McCracken County Grassroots Group is proud to announce our local candidate series.  For our September segment, we have selected Rep. Steven Rudy.  Steven is our current State Representative for the 1st house district.  The 1st House District is comprised of West McCracken, Ballard, Carlisle, Hickman and Fulton counties.  We had an opportunity to chat with Steven recently, and wanted to share with all of you, what he had to say!

1.)    What inspired you to run for political office?

“All of my life I’ve been interested in politics.  I registered as a Republican in 1996, and got to vote when I was 17 years old (in the Primary, since I was going to be 18 before the General).  I said during my Senior year of high school that I would be Ballard Co. Judge Executive before I was 30.  That vision changed and in 2004 I decided I would get into the political arena with encouragement from my family and friends (mostly my dad).  I wanted to make a difference for the area so I decided to run for State Representative.  Low and behold 12 months later we actually won.”

2.)  Tell us something intersting about yourself, that not many people know.  (i.e. hobbies or interests outside of politics)

“Politics does not consume all of my time by any means.  Jessica and I are members of Concord United Methodist, she has just started working with the youth.  A good friend and I have begun a new Sunday School class targeting 20-35 year olds, we’re really excited about it.  We have a 3.5 month daughter Maddie.  I work with my family in our small business.  I enjoy golfing and love watching sports.”

3.)    You are a very active facebook member.  How do you think social media has improved/broadened a candidate’s capabilities to reach voters?  Any negatives?

“I think facebook and other social medias are a great way for candidates to get out information to their supporters and also gives an opportunity for those supporters (friends) to see a more personal side of the candidate.  I can’t see any negatives to using facebook as a candidate, unless you’re depending on the social media as the only way to get your message out.”

4.)      Any special memory/favorite story about your time spent in Frankfort?

“Frankfort has been a wonderful experience for me.  One might think that it is constantly Democrats and Republicans fighting but it really isn’t.  Sure we have our partisan battles but more often than not the battles are Rural vs. Urban. Most things we actually vote on pass by an overwhelming majority.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet many interesting people from across Kentucky and the rest of the U.S. (even President George W. Bush).   I’m always glad when folks from home get to come up and see the General Assembly in action.  A funny story that happened during the 2010 session: it was 4H day at the capitol.  Mrs. Paula Jerrell, the Ballard Co. 4H agent, brought a group up as she always does.  About 10 of them were serving as pages on the House floor.  I went over to them during a recess and said ok everybody with Ballard come on, let’s go get our picture taken.  We did and I visited with them for a brief time afterwards.  When I got the picture back I knew all of the student but one and he was wearing a Hopkins Co. 4H shirt.  I couldn’t figure out why he had gotten in the picture.  Then I remembered the State Representative from Hopkins Co. was Eddie BALLARD. So when I said everyone with Ballard come on he came too.”

We are 92 days from the November election as of today.  The Fancy Farm political speaking is a week from tomorrow, August the 7th.  Monti Collins is campaigning to become the 6th District State Representative in Kentucky.  He does not represent a single district in Graves County, therefore he will not have a chance to speak next weekend at the Fancy Farm picnic.  Monti did however have the opportunity to speak today in Paducah at an event the Republican Party of Kentucky dubbed “Super Saturday”.  It was an event for any local Republican that is currently in office or seeking office in the Purchase Region.

Monti focused on two items:  Why he believes he will better represent those in his district and what type of volunteer campaign it will take to unseat an incumbent Democrat in Marshall, Lyon and a portion of McCracken Counties.

Collins began with a short bio, then introduced his wife who is a teacher in Calvert City, his two year old daughters, as well as his parents who were in attendance.  He then began with his thoughts on the current Democratic Leadership in the State House.  Collins said, “We want to see the House of Representatives in Kentucky reflect the majority of its citizens.  The Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo and most in his caucus do not reflect the majority today.  The Democratic leadership in the Kentucky House of Representatives is trying to take us down the path of Obama, Reid and Pelosi.  That is not the path that reflects the Conservative people of Kentucky.”

Collins then began to make the case for why he would better represent the citizens of the 6th District.  He said. “I am the true Conservative in this race, fiscally and socially. I don’t believe the House Democrats’ Tax, Borrow and Spend route will move Kentucky forward.  Moving on to social issues Collins said “I am endorsed by the Kentucky Right to Life PAC and I am pro-life, not because a questionnaire says that I am, but because we live it as a family and we are proud of that endorsement.”

Collins ended his time speaking about his volunteers.  “Let me end today by thanking those of you who have already helped me address and stuff envelopes, make phone calls, walk in parades, prepare food for events, hand out my brochures, and last but definitely not least those that have prayed for me and my family.”, said Collins when speaking about his current volunteers.  Collins ended by saying, “ Thank you for what you have already done and I ask you to get ready for what we are going to do in the next 94 days.  I need your help in this campaign.  I can’t do it without you.  I look forward to the night when I can stand before you and thank you again.  The difference that night is that I will be thanking you as your State Representative instead of your Republican nominee. “

Collins is running against an Incumbent Democrat Will Coursey from Marshall County.  Coursey has represented the 6th District since 2008 and is the Democratic nominee for the November 2nd election.
